Taking the Scenic Route: The 500-Year-Old Joke Behind Kotte

13 October, 2026

"Parangiya Kotte giya wage” - “Like the Portuguese went to Kotte.”

Every culture has an idiom for taking the ridiculously long way around. In Sri Lanka, that phrase belongs to a 16th-century arrival that turned into one of the island’s most enduring local jokes.

And the story played out right in our neighborhood.

The Ultimate 16th-Century Detour

In 1505, Portuguese explorer Lourenço de Almeida made landfall on the shores of Colombo. Seeking trade treaties and royal favor, his delegation requested an audience with King Dharma Parakramabahu IX at the royal seat of power: the Kingdom of Kotte.

The Sinhalese royal court agreed to guide the delegation, but with an intentional strategy.

The king had no desire to reveal how close and vulnerable his capital was to the Colombo harbor. What followed was a legendary masterclass in disorientation.

AspectHistorical Reality
Actual DistanceApproximately 10 kilometers (a direct brisk walk of about two hours).
The Route TakenA grueling, winding 3-day march across swamps, forests, and circuitous uphill terrain.
The ArrivalExhausted and convinced they had marched deep into the island’s mountain interior.
The RealityThe Portuguese fleet in Colombo harbor fired ceremonial cannon salutes every hour. Throughout their march, the soldiers could still clearly hear their own ships booming nearby.

The Capital Hidden in the Marshes

There was good reason for the court to preserve Kotte’s secrecy.

Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte was an ingenious water fortress designed to deter foreign incursions.

  • Natural Defenses: Nestled in the Diyawanna wetlands, encircled by natural water barriers, marshes, and ramparts of laterite stone (kabook).
  • Cultural Golden Age: A flourishing hub renowned for classical Sinhalese literature, poetry, and intricate Buddhist architecture.
  • Nature as Sanctuary: A capital protected not just by soldiers, but by the quiet labyrinth of waterways and wetland vegetation.

You do not need a three-day detour through marshes to reach our doors - though once you settle in and watch the morning mist rise across the water with a warm cup of Ceylon tea, you will understand why the ancient royals chose to hide away here.

Sometimes, taking the slow, scenic route to find your soul is the best journey of all.
